Ink in Motion — Procedural Risograph Films and the Claude Code Kit to Make Your Own

Procedural risograph films. Each is a single HTML file that draws every frame in Canvas 2D and plays its score from Web Audio. The source is open, and so is the Claude Code kit that made them.

The Collection

Films are 1080 × 1080 at 30 fps; MP4s are on the repository's release, and a film's notes link to its source. Prints are 2160 × 2160 stills.

Films

Window Seat (1:18). A night train journey through one fixed window, from golden fields to the following morning. Scored for piano.
Roost (1:10). A starling murmuration from sunset to roost, in one continuous take. Each bird is a 2–3 px ink dot, so the flock is the halftone. Scored for strings.
Held (1:10). A kite loses its line, tumbles across a harbor town and flies again after its trailing string catches a sailboat.
Nonpareil (1:10). Paper marbling seen straight down into the bath, in one continuous take. Drops of paint are raked and combed into a nonpareil pattern and drawn into a flower, then a sheet lifts it all off as one print. Scored for handpan.
Lumen (0:28). A seed unfolds into sails, wings, waves and leaves before becoming a flower. A 28-second scored short.
Emergence (0:28). A scored response to Lumen, following two signals as they develop into branching structures.

Prints

Viaduct. A curved masonry viaduct over a fog-filled gorge, a small steam train running for the tunnel. Arches and piers are built in perspective; the fog thins the ink rather than covering it.
Harbour. Pastel tower houses stacked above a harbour just after sunset. The sea reflects the same geometry mirrored, broken by the swell into streaks of window light.
Canyon. Buttes stepping back to the far rim, each carrying the same rock column from cream cap rock to red Redwall. The last sun burns the tops while the depths fill with violet.
Nautilus. Cabinet, plate I. A nautilus shell cut along its growth lines, every chamber set on one logarithmic spiral. A dotted pink line carries the spiral on past the opening, as the growth that did not happen.
Diatoms. Cabinet, plate II. Microscopic diatoms laid out in a six-fold Victorian rosette and lit as under a dark-field microscope. The dark ground is two inks overprinted, and the brightest cores are bare paper.
Luna Moth. Cabinet, plate III. A luna moth set with its wings spread, the outline, veins and eyespots measured from a photograph. An inset magnifies one eyespot into its overlapping scales.
Agate. Cabinet, plate IV. A cut agate whose bands grow inward from the cavity wall, with a level floor of onyx laid down by gravity. Crystals fill the hollow at its heart.
Sunflower. Cabinet, plate V. A sunflower in late August, its florets set in spirals of 34 and 55. Seed has set at the rim, the middle ring is shedding pollen and the center is still in bud; a bird has already worked the lower right.

I directed these films and Claude Code wrote them, working from the kit in one public, MIT-licensed repository. Clone it and your own sessions get the same workflow for animation, stills and music.

riso-film: Animation. Plans the film in a FILM.md, proves the hardest frame first, inspects frame strips and exports an exact MP4.
riso-still: Stills and posters. Composition, perspective and ink plates, delivered as a native-resolution PNG.
riso-score: Music and sound. A deterministic Web Audio score cued from the picture and checked for loudness and sync.
tools/ docs/: The harness and the craft notes: scaffolding, verification, contact sheets, audio analysis and MP4 export, plus the brief, drawing, motion, sound and quality-bar docs.
