What is Pixels Toolkit?

Pixels Toolkit is a free desktop app for pixel art processing. It converts upscaled or AI-generated art into production-ready pixel sprites by detecting pixel grids and cleaning them to true resolution. Version 1.2.1 adds bulk processing for entire folders — apply color merge, outline, alpha normalization, background removal, and auto-downscale across all images with a single action. Originals are backed up with full revert support. Also includes palette normalization, outline generation, and sprite sheet packing with JSON metadata. Available for Windows (.msi), macOS (.dmg universal), and Linux (.AppImage, .deb). Built with Tauri and Rust. Free for personal and commercial use.

How do I downscale pixel art from AI-generated images?

Open Pixels Toolkit, add your images, and use Smart Downscale. The app detects the underlying pixel grid in upscaled artwork — even when blurred by anti-aliasing or color noise — and cleanly reduces it to true pixel resolution. Process one image or batch hundreds. Settings persist per project so repeat workflows are instant.

What pixel art asset packs are available?

21 hand-crafted pixel art packs with over 5500 sprites total, available on itch.io. Includes: Somarfest, a 1,100-asset midsummer festival pack, 1000+ modern RPG icons, 512 stonehewn fantasy RPG icons, 500+ RPG icons, 400+ gear icons, 500+ portrait expressions (32 characters × 16 emotions), 100+ cars & vehicles, 100+ vehicles, 170+ block textures, 100+ character heads with 8-direction rotations, fantasy structures, alchemy props, a dark RPG GUI kit, 250+ RPG shield sprites, 15 fantasy background scenes, and themed environment packs (haunted house, boatyard, farmstead, autumn harvest). All assets are created for game development and licensed for commercial use.

Is Pixels free?

Yes. The Pixels Toolkit desktop app is completely free for personal and commercial use — no license key, no subscription, no nag screen. Download the installer for Windows (.msi, 8.5 MB), macOS (.dmg universal), or Linux (.AppImage / .deb) and use it as long as you want. The source code is open on GitHub. The asset packs are separate products sold on itch.io; several packs (including Somarfest and the autumn harvest pack) are free to download there as well.

How Does Smart Downscale Work?

AI art generators and upscaling tools often produce pixel-style images at high resolutions (512×512, 1024×1024) where each logical pixel is actually a blurry 4×4 or 8×8 block of real pixels. Smart Downscale detects that underlying grid automatically — even when anti-aliasing, color noise, or subtle blending has obscured it — then reduces the image to true pixel resolution in a single step. The result is a clean, sharp sprite at the correct size (e.g. 64×64) instead of a fuzzy upscale at 512×512. No manual resizing or counting pixels. Process a single image or batch an entire folder with the same settings.

Pixels vs Aseprite: Different Jobs

Aseprite (~$20, or free if you compile it) is the dominant pixel-art editor — it's where you draw, animate, and paint. Pixels Toolkit is a processing tool for game developers who receive upscaled or AI-generated art and need to clean it up, batch it, pack it, and ship it. They solve different problems and work well together.

Task Pixels Toolkit Aseprite
Draw or paint pixel art
Animate sprites (onion skin, frames, tags)
Downscale upscaled / AI art to true pixel resolution ✓ Smart detect Manual only
Batch process hundreds of sprites at once Limited
Generate sprite sheet + JSON metadata
Add outlines or normalize alpha in bulk Manual/scripted
Price Free ~$20

Typical workflow: draw and animate in Aseprite → export at high resolution → use Pixels Toolkit to downscale to true pixel size, batch-normalize opacity, generate outlines, and pack into a sprite sheet ready for your game engine.
